Its all in the art of the dance...

This Aug. 6, 2011 column by Columbian Editor Lou Brancaccio discussed "the dance" that public officials do when they are asked questions by reporters and the public. The column was based on a series of interviews that Murrow News Service intern Justin Runquist did with a state senator during is summer in Olympia for the Vancouver newspaper. The outcome is that Justin's stories were accurate but it is a lesson that reporters and the public need to continually delve deeper with public officials to get the full assessment of a story. It also suggests that public officials should not tip toe around issues too much unless they are really prepared to dance. Read the column.

So what does a budget cut look like?

This blog by former Tri-city Herald Managing Editor Ken Robertson talks about the impact of state budget cuts and also makes reference to testimony before the state Higher Education Coordinating Board by the Murrow News Service-Olympia summer intern, Brier Gabriel. "We've all been reading about the millions and billions of dollars that local, state and federal governments have slashed from their budgets, but I suspect most of us can't recall too many specifics of the program cuts," Robertson said. It was one of Ken's last blogs as managing editor. He retired July 27, 2011 after 35 years with the Tri-City Herald. A University of Montana graduate, he has been a great friend of the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication at WSU. Read the blog.

Photographer will face discipline

The generous offer by The Olympian to host the Murrow News Service Olympia program in its working newsroom has given our interns many benefits. That includes an interesting glimpse into a journalism ethics issue. The issue involves an Olympian photographer assisting a police officer by sharing a pre-published photo in 2008. The photo led to an arrest of an arsonist (wearing unique shoes) who may not otherwise have been identified. Details of the 2008 incident were still being revealed during the summer of 2011. It came to our attention early in the summer semester this year when our interns arrived to The Olympian only to find the building was the subject of a crime scene investigation. Anarchists had tossed chemicals (apparently an acid compound) on the front of the building which ruined huge front glass panes and doors. “Snitch” was spray painted on the building. All of this has been the subject of much discussion in the newsroom and newspaper meetings and a thorough follow-up story. While the photographer's decision was praised by many Olympia residents, then Managing Editor Jerry Wakefield wrote a column published July 11, 2011 that said the photographer's action violated the trust of Olympian readers. Jerry retired from The Olympian this month. Read the column.
